Oracle is best known for its database software. In a recent call with investors, however, the CTO Larry Ellison emphasized Oracle’s fast-growing internet hosting service.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) currently leads the pack for cloud hosting, but the potential market is huge. Oracle claims its databases run up to 10 times faster on Oracle hosting than they do on AWS. Oracle wants to keep expanding its market segment to non-Oracle workloads too. Internet hosting is the infrastructure under everything from mobile apps, to websites, to file storage, and of course database storage and retrieval.
The Internet as a Service (IaaS) portion of Oracle’s business grew about 2 percent last year, making Ellison’s plan an ambitious one.
