For the past few years, the FAA has required owners of drones to register their Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) with the federal government. The process required information provided online and a $5 charge. Now, a new ruling has overturned the regulation for hobbyists and drones that are less than 55 pounds and flown within community guidelines. When flying within five miles of an airport, pilots are required to notify authorities, but otherwise are free to take to the skies.
Those who have registered their drones are able to delete their registration and are eligible for a refund of the registration fee. Visit the FAA’s website for more information on compliance and removing your information.
