The Volkswagen XL1 is a luxury car that gets over 200 MPG. 250 of the vehicles are being manufactured and sold in Europe, as a market test of the appeal of a 2-seater luxury vehicle that sells for $150,000 and gets five times the fuel-efficiency of a Prius.

While three of them were taken for a tour in the United States, the vehicles won’t be available for sale here, as the U.S. has stricter safety requirements than Europe which the vehicle can’t pass – at least in this iteration.
If excitement for these kinds of vehicles continues to mount, soon you could be driving a hybrid with a 2-gallon tank that can go hundreds of miles between fill-ups.
