How a small business can safeguard itself against the different flavors of lawsuits by using technology to secure data and keep track of IP and contracts.

What do lawsuits and technology have in common? I listened to a radio show this morning that talked about that. Can a small business use technology to avoid lawsuits?

Lawsuits come in a variety of flavors. A small business needs to identify the flavors. One flavor is data privacy leaks resulting from a hack.

In past articles, we’ve discussed the importance of tight cybersecurity for your business. Poor security leads to data breaches. You’re open to a lawsuit if the data breaches include customer or client information.

IP or intellectual property is ripe for legal entanglements. Keeping on top of your business’s IP is essential, and there is software to help. Whether you need a general tracking system or a more specific one for patents and trademarks, there are many choices

Do you have a written contract? Get it in writing and keep it on file digitally for services or goods. Not having a business agreement in writing is an open invitation to a lawsuit.

Do you know where all those contracts are stored? Probably not, as some are in IT, some are in finance, and others are on an employee’s laptop. If you can’t find that contract, you’re inviting a lawsuit.

A best practice is a central repository for all your contracts and agreements. Here are several small business-focused contract management software choices. Whether you’re the business owner, sales manager, or general counsel, there’s a good fit for you.
