How to calm your anxiety about monthly Cloud service costs

Do you dread opening your cloud computing bill every month? Let’s look at ways to keep your cloud computing costs down. Your bill shouldn’t frighten you every month.

Having a FinOps team helps keep costs to a minimum and keeps most employees happy. But what if a FinOps team isn’t feasible for your business? Renegotiate your current contract if you can, or prepare for contract negotiations months before the contract renews.

The key to negotiating a better contract is preparation. Dive deeply into your usage and speak with all the departments about their cloud use. Know what you want to achieve before you begin negotiating.

A deep dive may uncover capacity you’re paying for but not using. Are departments staying within their budget, or do they even have a budget? You can’t control your cloud services spending if no one is accountable.

Focus on using cloud services that support business building projects, replace worn-out hardware, or speed up product development. Let your on-premise network servers handle the non-critical stuff.

Are you keeping backups of backups? It’s not necessary, and it’s costly. Storing data locally using object storage or a classic database allows it to be accessed quickly, without overloading your network and saving storage space.

Do you have data you need to keep but rarely access? That’s cold data, and you can save costs by uploading to a hard disk. Having a physical copy can be a good thing.
