How to Decide between a Website Redesign and Optimization

It seems like web designers see a small business like mine and immediately try to sell me a “better” website. Do you know if your website is doing its job? A better question is: do I need a revamped website or an optimized one?

How to know if your website needs a design upgrade. If there are lots of flashy videos that play automatically or fancy graphics, it’s outdated. Get right down to business, what services you offer, and what problems your products solve.

It’s necessary that your website be mobile-friendly and make your homepage scrollable. Your website needs a current SSL certificate to enable HTTPS. If you don’t have it, Google will warn visitors.

There are sites I used to visit that I can’t anymore because their SSL certificates aren’t current. If your website was designed years ago, a redesign may be in the cards due to SSL issues. Otherwise, browsers may turn customers away from your website, and Google won’t rank it well.

Use SEO and GEO tools to optimize your content so customers find your business. Free tools you can use to optimize are Google Search Console or the HubSpot AEO grader. There are many optimization tools, from Ahrefs to Clearscope to Surfer SEO.

Choose tools that meet your specific business needs. Do you need more traffic or to convert window shoppers to customers?

Choose a reliable hosting site that offers fast server response speeds. You can check your current website with PageSpeed Insights. Compress images and videos to improve your site’s loading speed.
